Jon Bernthal’s Punisher: Disney+ Special to Be Marvel’s Longest Yet

Jon Bernthal is set to create a significant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Frank Castle, The Punisher, and his upcoming Disney+ special presentation is poised to break records. A listing on the Writers Guild of America (WGA) website reveals the special will run for a full 60 minutes, making it the longest Marvel Studios Special Presentation to date, exceeding previous specials like Werewolf by Night (53 minutes) and Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (42 minutes).

Bernthal’s reprisal of the role, initially made famous in the Netflix series Daredevil and its spin-off The Punisher, comes after his reintroduction to the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again. This new special, co-written by Bernthal himself and director Reinaldo Marcus Green, promises an extended narrative for the vigilante, diverging from the shorter format of previous Marvel specials. The project was reportedly conceived during filming of Daredevil: Born Again, signaling a deliberate expansion of Frank Castle’s story within the MCU.

The 60-minute runtime, although initially reported as a record, has seen some nuance. The Direct notes that the WGA listing for Werewolf by Night likewise indicated a 60-minute runtime, despite the final cut being closer to 55 minutes. However, the intention remains clear: Marvel Studios is aiming for a more substantial and cinematic experience for The Punisher’s standalone story.

Filmed over a 12-day period in New York City during July and August 2025, the special is expected to arrive on Disney+ around the same time as the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July 2026. Bernthal will also appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, marking his first foray into the MCU’s big-screen adventures. He described the upcoming projects as “high-octane Punisher,” believing the character can seamlessly transition between the two narratives, as reported by Yahoo Entertainment.

A Darker Tone for the Anti-Hero

Bernthal has assured fans that the Disney+ special will remain true to the character’s established intensity. “It’s going to be dark,” he stated, emphasizing that Frank Castle won’t be undergoing a significant tonal shift for the Disney+ platform. “Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.” This commitment to the character’s core identity is a key element in building anticipation for the special.

The creative team behind the project includes director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who previously helmed King Richard, and co-writer Jon Bernthal. Supporting actors Jason R. Moore, Roe Rancell, and Mila Jaymes will also feature in the special. Brad Winderbaum described the project as “a shotgun blast of a story,” hinting at a fast-paced and explosive narrative.

The Evolution of Marvel’s Special Presentations

Marvel Studios introduced the Special Presentation format with Werewolf by Night in 2022, followed by The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. These presentations offered a different storytelling approach compared to the traditional series and films within the MCU. The Punisher’s special, with its extended runtime, represents a further evolution of this format, signaling Marvel’s willingness to experiment with longer-form narratives for specific characters, and storylines.

The increased runtime allows for a deeper exploration of Frank Castle’s motivations and methods, potentially delving into the psychological toll of his vigilantism and his place within the broader MCU landscape. Fans of the character, who have long awaited his return, will be eager to see how Bernthal and the creative team translate the Punisher’s complex and often brutal world to the Disney+ platform.

As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build for this record-breaking special. The combination of a longer runtime, Bernthal’s commitment to the character, and the promise of an intense narrative suggests that this presentation will be a significant addition to the MCU, offering a unique and compelling story for fans of The Punisher and the wider Marvel universe.
