Cerler, Spain – Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates rebounded strongly from a challenging day in the Pyrenees to claim victory in Stage Seven of the Vuelta a España on Friday. The 22-year-old cyclist completed the 188km route from Andorra la Vella to Cerler, showcasing a return to peak performance after struggling on the first mountain stage.
Ayuso’s win marks his second Grand Tour stage victory, following a win at the Giro. “After the Giro, when I won my first Grand Tour stage, to win a stage here in the Vuelta, which is my favorite race, it’s amazing,” stated the elated racer, adding that he will remember his performance on Friday “always” and felt “super proud.”
Rounding out the stage, Italy’s Marco Frigo (Israel-Premier Tech) secured second place, finishing one minute and 15 seconds behind Ayuso. Spain’s Raul Garcia Pierna (Arkea-B&B Hotels) completed the podium in third.
Despite a strong performance, the overall race lead remains with Norway’s Torstein traeen (Bahrain Victorious). Traeen defended his red jersey, finishing alongside two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike). Vingegaard climbed to second place however, trails Traeen by 2 minutes and 33 seconds.
Ayuso currently sits further back, almost seven and a half minutes behind the race leader.
Vingegaard indicated a strategic decision to conserve energy during the stage, explaining, “It was not an easy day and we didn’t want to go. We wanted to still try to save our energy a bit, so we decided not to do anything today.”
Saturday’s Stage Eight will present a change of pace with a flat 163.5km course from Monzon Templario to Zaragoza.
