Justin Timberlake DWI Arrest: Body Cam Footage Released

The body cam footage of Justin Timberlake’s 2024 arrest in Sag Harbor, New York, on suspicion of driving while intoxicated has been released to the public following a legal agreement. The release on Friday, March 20, marks the culmination of a months-long battle over access to the video, initially resisted by the singer’s legal team. The footage provides a firsthand look at Timberlake’s interactions with law enforcement during the traffic stop and subsequent arrest, offering new details surrounding the incident.

Timberlake was initially taken into custody in June 2024 after allegedly running a stop sign and veering out of his lane, according to reports. He ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of impaired driving in September 2024, avoiding a more serious DUI conviction. As part of the plea deal, Timberlake received a fine, was ordered to complete 25 hours of community service and faced a temporary suspension of his driver’s license. He likewise participated in a public service announcement emphasizing the dangers of driving under the influence, urging viewers, “Even if you’ve had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel of a car.”

Details from the Released Footage

The released video, first obtained by The Associated Press, shows Timberlake undergoing field sobriety tests on the side of the road. He appears unsteady and struggles with the exercises, expressing frustration to the officers. “These are like really hard tests,” Timberlake is heard saying in the footage, adding, “Sorry, my heart is racing.” He also told officers he was simply following his friends home, stating, “Guys, I’m just following my friends back to my house. I’m not doing anything. I’m just following my friends back to my house.”

The footage shows Timberlake being placed in handcuffs and taken into custody. His lawyers had previously argued that the release of the video would be an invasion of privacy, claiming it depicted him in an “acutely vulnerable state.” They initially filed a lawsuit to block its release, but later agreed to redactions as part of a settlement with the Village of Sag Harbor.

Legal Battles and Village Response

The legal dispute stemmed from a Freedom of Information Law request filed by news outlets seeking access to the police body cam footage. A Long Island judge temporarily blocked the release of the video pending a review. However, the Village of Sag Harbor ultimately complied with the request after reaching an agreement with Timberlake’s attorneys regarding redactions to protect privacy and officer safety.

In a statement released on March 20, the Village of Sag Harbor affirmed its commitment to transparency while balancing public interest with privacy concerns. “We are pleased that this matter has now been resolved and the village will be able to comply with its statutory obligation to release the material that is subject to disclosure,” the statement read. “From the beginning of this matter, after Mr. Timberlake’s arrest, the village has attempted to comply with the mandates of the Freedom of Information Law.”

The release of the footage comes after Timberlake’s recent performance at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on April 1, 2024, marking his first public performance since revealing his diagnosis with Lyme disease.

As the legal proceedings conclude and the footage is now public, the focus shifts to how this incident may impact Timberlake’s public image and future endeavors. The singer has not yet issued a further statement regarding the release of the video.
