Juwan Howard’s Successful Heart Procedure and Recovery: Updates on the Michigan Coach’s Health

Coach of the University of Michigan, former All-Star and NBA champion, and eternal member of the legendary “Fab Five”, Juwan Howard is a well-known name in the world of American basketball. We just learned that he had a successful heart operation yesterday.

We reassure you right away, the operation was planned and took place normally, which should allow Juwan Howard to return to his position as coach in the near future.

According to Jeff Borzello, an insider who covers college basketball for ESPN, Howard had surgery to treat an aortic aneurysm and to repair an aortic valve. Rehabilitation can last up to 12 weeks but Juwan Howard should be able to return to the Michigan Wolverines staff in four to six weeks.

In the meantime, his assistant Phil Martelli will take over. The college season will begin in early November for the Wolverines.

Coach of Michigan since 2019 following being an assistant to Erik Spoelstra at the Miami Heat for six years, Juwan Howard is regarding to begin his fifth season at the helm of the Wolverines. Its best campaign came in 2020-21, when Michigan finished first in the Big Ten Conference and then advanced to the Elite Eight of March Madness. That year, Howard was voted College Coach of the Year, earning him a contract extension through 2026.
