Kannada Film Chamber Demands Apology from Kamal Haasan, Threatens to Stall ‘Thug Life’ Release

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has issued a strong demand for an apology from acclaimed actor Kamal haasan following his recent remarks concerning the Kannada language. KFCC’s Stance: A Matter of State Pride

M Narasimhalu,The Chairman Of The KFCC,emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating,”It’s no longer about a film. It’s about an entire state.” The controversy stems from comments made by Kamal Haasan during the audio launch of Thug Life in Chennai on Saturday, May 24, 2025, where he reportedly suggested that “Tamil gave birth to Kannada.” These statements ignited immediate backlash from various groups in Karnataka, including pro-Kannada organizations and members of the BJP, who felt the remarks denigrated their linguistic heritage.

On Thursday, May 29, 2025, The KFCC convened a meeting with the Exhibitors Association of Karnataka and The Distributors Association of Karnataka to address the escalating issue. The collective decision was firm: an apology from Kamal Haasan is mandatory for the undisturbed release of Thug Life in Karnataka.”The KFCC stands by the sentiments of the people of Karnataka,” Narasimhalu affirmed, highlighting the unified front presented by distributors, exhibitors, and former KFCC presidents.

Economic Stakes: Bengaluru’s Significance

Bengaluru represents a considerable market for major Tamil film releases.Any delay in the release of Thug Life could result in significant financial losses for distributors.According to industry analysts at Sacnilk, big-budget Tamil films earn a crucial part of their revenue from Karnataka, with Bengaluru being a key contributor. “The distributors are seeking the help of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce to obtain an apology from Kamal Haasan. As of now, we have directed theater owners and distributors to refrain from taking the film yet,” Narasimhalu added, underscoring the severity of the directive.

Historical Echoes: Past Controversies

This is not the first instance of language-related controversies impacting film releases in Karnataka. In 2018, the release of Kaala faced similar hurdles following remarks made by superstar Rajinikanth regarding the Cauvery River dispute. Distributors who had acquired the film at a high price suffered considerable losses when the film’s initial release was disrupted. Rajinikanth’s comments urging the then-Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to release Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water, as mandated by the Supreme Court, triggered widespread protests. Kaala eventually premiered a day late in Karnataka after tense negotiations.

Narasimhalu also recalled the challenges surrounding the release of Baahubali 2 in 2021. Pro-Kannada factions threatened to ban the film due to actor Sathyaraj’s previous “anti-Kannada” statements related to the Cauvery River issue. The situation was resolved after Sathyaraj and director SS Rajamouli addressed the concerns and appealed for the film’s release, ensuring its successful screening in Karnataka.
