BANDON, Ore. – Kansas golfer Lyla Louderbaugh demonstrated remarkable resilience at Bandon Dunes on Friday, securing her place in teh semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship after a hard-fought 20-hole victory over top-ranked Kiara Romero.
Louderbaugh, a two-time Kansas Women’s Amateur champion, appeared poised for a straightforward win, building a 2-up lead with just two holes remaining. However, a challenging wind off the Pacific coast, with gusts reaching 30 mph, dramatically shifted the momentum.
Romero, the No. 1 amateur in women’s golf, battled back, capitalizing on Louderbaugh’s struggles on the 17th and 18th holes to force the match into extra play. Louderbaugh found trouble on both holes, sending approaches into the bushes and ultimately conceding the 18th.
“I went to the bathroom and told myself, ‘Leading up the last two holes you were doing great. You don’t need to let the two misses affect you,'” Louderbaugh explained. She requested space from her caddie to regain focus and strategize.
The sudden-death playoff proved equally tense.A near-miss birdie putt on the 10th hole kept the match alive, and ultimately, it was Romero who faltered on the 20th, finding trouble off the tee and missing a crucial par putt. Louderbaugh then calmly two-putted from 20 feet to claim the victory.
“I was confident I could come out and beat her today,” said Louderbaugh, currently ranked No. 249 in the women’s amateur rankings.
Semifinal Matchups Set
Louderbaugh will now face Brooke Biermann, who defeated Arianna Lau of Hong Kong 3 and 2. In the other semifinal, Stanford senior Megha Ganne overcame Eila Galitsky of Thailand 2 and 1, and will play against Ella Scaysbrook of Australia, who secured a dominant 5-and-4 win over Taylor Kehoe of Canada.
Ganne maintained her lead throughout her match against Galitsky, relying on clutch par putts to stay ahead. Biermann, meanwhile, turned the tide with a strong run, winning three consecutive holes, including a remarkable approach shot on the 11th.
