“It’s regarding simply improving the system.” With these words, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) began his plea for tougher EU external border protection and asylum procedures at the external borders, if not even in countries on the other side of the Mediterranean, from Europe’s point of view, in “ZiB 2” on Wednesday evening. According to Karner, the Austrian asylum system was overburdened with 110,000 asylum applications last year, and overall the number of applications per capita in the EU was second to Cyprus.
