Kelowna Rockets Dominate Victoria Royals 9-2 | WHL Highlights

Kelowna, BC – The Kelowna Rockets delivered a resounding performance Saturday night, defeating the Victoria Royals 9-2 in a Western Hockey League (WHL) matchup. The victory came after a Friday night loss to the Vancouver Giants, and the Rockets responded emphatically with a dominant offensive display.

The Rockets’ offense exploded, led by a five-point night from Tig Iginla, who scored one goal and added four assists. The win keeps Kelowna firmly in contention within the competitive Western Conference standings, tied with the Prince George Cougars for third place.

Shane Smith contributed two goals to the Rockets’ total, even as Hayden Paupanekis, Keith McInnis, Ty Halaburda, Mazden Leslie, Owen Folstrom, and Rowan Guest each added a single goal. Leslie’s goal was particularly noteworthy, marking his 250th career point and making him the 13th defenceman in WHL history – and the first in a Rockets uniform – to reach that milestone. KelownaNow reported on the Rockets’ busy weekend schedule.

The Rockets established control early, leading 4-1 after the first period and extending their advantage to 7-2 by the end of the second. Josh Banini was solid in net for Kelowna, turning aside 28 shots to secure the win. At the other end, former Rockets goaltender Jake Pilon faced a barrage of 46 shots, allowing all nine goals.

Rockets’ Offensive Powerhouse

Thirteen of Kelowna’s 18 skaters registered at least one point, showcasing the team’s depth and offensive capabilities. The Rockets capitalized on two of three power-play opportunities, while the Royals were limited to just one power play throughout the game. Parker Alcos and Carson Wetsch each recorded two assists, further contributing to the team’s offensive success.

Western Conference Standings Tighten

With 78 points apiece, the Kelowna Rockets and Prince George Cougars are locked in a tight battle for third place in the Western Conference. The Cougars currently hold the edge due to having three more wins than the Rockets. The BVM Sports notes the competitive landscape of the Western Conference as teams vie for playoff positioning.

The Royals, meanwhile, continue to struggle on the road, as highlighted by the Victoria Times Colonist. The team will need to find consistency away from home as they navigate the final stretch of the season.

Looking Ahead

The Kelowna Rockets will conclude their weekend schedule with a game against the Vancouver Giants in Langley on Sunday afternoon. The Royals will return home to host the Vancouver Giants this Friday for Indigenous Celebrations Night, presented by Western Coast Insurance, at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, as reported by OurSportsCentral. The Royals have seven games remaining in the regular season as they push for a playoff berth.

The Rockets’ dominant performance against the Royals serves as a strong statement as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot and a potential run at the 2026 Memorial Cup, which Kelowna is set to host. Share your thoughts on the game and the Rockets’ playoff chances in the comments below.
