Kentucky’s Jayden Quaintance Finds Escape in Manga During Injury Recovery

ST. LOUIS – While his Kentucky teammates prepared for Sunday’s second-round NCAA tournament matchup against Iowa State, freshman Jayden Quaintance found solace in the pages of a Japanese graphic novel. The captivating world of manga has become a crucial coping mechanism for the sidelined forward as he navigates a challenging recovery from a significant knee injury.

Quaintance, a highly-touted five-star recruit and former McDonald’s All-American, is currently unable to compete due to complications stemming from a torn ACL and meniscus suffered in February 2025 while playing for Arizona State. Despite playing in four games this season, swelling in his knee has kept him off the court since January 7th. The 6-foot-10 forward is leaning on reading to pass the time and maintain focus during his rehabilitation.

Amidst the “cramped and muggy quarters” of the Wildcats’ locker room at the Enterprise Center, Quaintance was deeply engrossed in an issue of “Berserk,” a popular manga series, according to reports. He estimates he brought 15 or 16 copies with him on the team’s trip to St. Louis, which was extended after a dramatic overtime victory over Santa Clara on Friday.

Quaintance’s journey into the world of manga began with anime. He binged all three seasons of “Jujutsu Kaisen” in just three days, sparking a desire to explore the source material that wasn’t adapted for animation. “It’s essentially like reading the books of a popular series before the next movie comes out,” he explained.

Finding Focus Through Storytelling

Beyond “Berserk,” Quaintance is also enjoying “One-Punch Man,” describing it as a “much lighter read.” He shared that he previously struggled to find downtime, preferring to remain focused on the immediate demands of the game. “I watched anime a lot last year, but I never really got into reading as much,” Quaintance said. “But having a lot more free time nowadays, just a nice hobby to have.”

The freshman recently received a steroid injection in his knee and is hopeful he could be cleared to practice within the next two weeks, a potentially significant step in his recovery. This timeline is particularly essential given his future prospects; Quaintance is currently ranked as the No. 18 prospect in ESPN’s 2026 NBA draft rankings.

NBA Aspirations and a Return to the Court

Quaintance indicated he “most likely” plans to declare for the NBA draft at the end of the season. He views his recovery as crucial to showcasing his abilities to prospective franchises. “My return timeline is shaping up well for the potential predraft process,” he said, adding that he wants to demonstrate to teams that his knee is fully healed and that he remains the same player he was before the injury.

However, even as he looks ahead to a potential professional career, Quaintance intends to continue his newfound reading habit. “I experience like [reading manga] and just reading normal books, I feel like it’s something that I want to produce more of a habit in my everyday life,” he said. “And I’ve been enjoying it a lot, so I’m glad I kind of had this time to reflect and find something.”

Jayden Quaintance’s story highlights the importance of finding healthy coping mechanisms during challenging times. While his teammates prepare for the pressures of March Madness, Quaintance is finding grounding and focus through the immersive narratives of manga, a practice he hopes to continue long after his return to the court.

What comes next for Quaintance will depend on his recovery progress. The next two weeks will be critical as he awaits clearance to resume practice, a key step toward demonstrating his readiness for the NBA draft.
