Kenya’s annual inflation rate rose slightly in October, with increases in fuel, transport and food prices playing a significant role, according to statistics agency data released on Tuesday.

Inflation reached 6.9% year-on-year in October, compared to 6.8% the previous month.

On a monthly basis, inflation was 1.0%, the same as in September, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement.

In mid-October, the country’s energy and petroleum regulator announced an increase in gasoline, diesel and kerosene prices for the coming month.

Fuel prices are a major contributor to inflation in the East African country, which relies heavily on diesel for transport, power generation and agriculture, while kerosene is used in many homes for cooking and lighting.

The statistics bureau said the index of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels increased by 1.9 percent in October from the previous month, while the index of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 1.3% compared to September. The transport index increased by 1.5%.
