Lisbon, Portugal – A recent series of incidents involving orcas, also known as killer whales, aggressively interacting with boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal is raising alarm among mariners and researchers. These encounters, initially reported in May 2020, have been steadily increasing in frequency and intensity, with recent events demonstrating a clear escalation in the behavior and a potential threat to vessel safety.A rescue operation was recently elaborate when the vessel was called back from aiding one stricken boat to assist another, reportedly damaged after an encounter with the same group of orcas. The second boat had suffered a leak, potentially caused by the impacts from the marine mammals.

“The truth is that we were very scared; we were actually really scared when we realised that the killer whales were hitting the boat,” one crew member recounted, highlighting the fear experienced by those directly involved.
