SACRAMENTO, CA – As the NBA season winds down, attention shifts to the bottom of the Western Conference standings, where the Sacramento Kings and the Utah Jazz find themselves locked in a struggle to avoid the basement. The Kings, showing signs of life with three wins in their last four games, will host the Jazz on Sunday night, hoping to continue their recent momentum. This matchup pits two teams heading in opposite directions, with the Jazz reeling after 10 losses in their past 12 contests and currently holding a record of 20-47.
Saturday night saw a significant performance from the Kings, who secured a convincing 118-109 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. The win, Sacramento’s 17th of the season, was fueled by a balanced attack led by DeMar DeRozan, Precious Achiuwa, and Maxime Raynaud. The Jazz, meanwhile, were idle, giving them time to prepare for a crucial contest against a Kings team that appears to be finding its stride.
The Kings’ recent success is a welcome change after a challenging stretch earlier in the season. DeRozan emphasized the importance of building positive habits, stating, “It was a collective effort. I know where we’re at record-wise. Me being one of the veterans, we’re just trying to build winning habits and share the young guys we have to go there and compete every night.”
Sacramento’s victory over the Clippers was a testament to their efficiency, shooting 58.5% from the field and dominating the boards with 48 rebounds compared to the Clippers’ 35. DeRozan led the way with 27 points and seven assists, while Achiuwa contributed 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Raynaud added 23 points. The trio combined to shoot an impressive 80% from the floor, making 32 of their 40 attempts.
Westbrook’s Continued Excellence
Adding to the Kings’ impressive performance was Russell Westbrook, who despite shooting just 4-of-15 from the field, managed to record a double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. This marked his second triple-double in three games and extended his NBA career record to 209. Notably, Westbrook previously achieved a triple-double against the Jazz on November 28, with 16 points, 14 assists, and 12 rebounds in a 128-119 road loss.
Jazz Facing Challenges
The Utah Jazz, are grappling with a difficult season. They suffered a 124-114 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night, despite a strong start that saw them lead by 18 points in the first quarter. The Jazz managed to force 24 turnovers and record 16 steals, but ultimately couldn’t hold onto their lead. Coach Will Hardy acknowledged the team’s aggressive play, stating, “The activity and the aggressiveness is exactly how we want to play. Sixteen steals for us is an incredibly high number.”
Brice Sensabaugh has emerged as a bright spot for the Jazz, scoring 31 points against the Trail Blazers, including six 3-pointers, continuing a hot streak that saw him score 29 points in the previous game against the New York Knicks. Cody Williams also contributed a career-best 19 points against Portland, demonstrating growth in his game.
Keyonte George’s Injury Impacts Jazz
Although, the Jazz will be without a key player in Keyonte George, who is expected to miss at least two weeks with a right hamstring injury. George, considered a leading candidate for the Most Improved Player award, is averaging 23.6 points and 6.1 assists while shooting 37.1% from three-point range – all career highs. He has played in 54 games and needs to appear in 65 to be eligible for end-of-season awards, leaving him with limited opportunities to qualify given the team’s remaining 15 games.
Utah was previously fined $500,000 in mid-February by the NBA for “conduct detrimental to the league,” a penalty related to concerns about the team intentionally losing games.
Looking Ahead
DeRozan is focused on securing a season split with the Jazz, stating, “We go back home, feed off our crowd and try to obtain another win.” Sunday’s game represents an opportunity for the Kings to further solidify their recent improvements and distance themselves from the bottom of the Western Conference. For the Jazz, it’s a chance to salvage some pride and build momentum for the future, despite the absence of a key player in George.
The matchup promises to be a competitive one, as Utah has won two of the three previous meetings between the two teams this season. Fans can expect a hard-fought contest as both teams look to finish the season strong.
