He has been on theater stages for 60 years, and on those of the Burgtheater for 50: When Klaus Maria Brandauer celebrates his 80th birthday in two weeks, the Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee from Altaussee will be celebrating several anniversaries. (Brandauer received a Golden Globe for “Jenseits von Afrika” and was nominated for an Oscar, for “Mephisto” Brandauer accepted the Oscar instead of director István Szabó.) STANDARD culture director Stephan Hilpold met the actor on the grand staircase of the Burgtheater to meet with to talk to him regarding the power of theatre, difficult directors and the training of actors. As is well known, Brandauer taught at the Max Reinhardt Seminar for more than 15 years, which recently got into serious turbulence and whose director Maria Happel resigned at the beginning of this week. Brandauer will read from Thomas Bernhardt’s play “Minetti” as part of a festival performance on June 22 at the Vienna Academy Theater.
