Kriszta Székely applies for the position of director of the Katona József Theater

The director of the Katona József Színház, Kriszta Székely, will apply for the position of director of the institution next year – this was announced by the current director Gábor Máté, whose mandate expires on January 31, 2026, at the theater’s opening meeting. It has already been revealed that the management of Katona wants an applicant from within the theater, and now that the company would like to see Kriszta Székely at the head of the theater after Máté.

Gábor Máté, who turns 70 next year, will lead Katona from February 1, 2011, and will start his last full season as director this year. In the theater’s 2024/25 season, Kriszta Székely will direct Ferdinand von Schirach’s play Open Negotiation, in which Dorottya Udvaros will appear as a guest artist. As a founding member of Katona, Udvaros was a member of the troupe between 1982 and 1993, so he returns to the theater’s stage after more than thirty years.

In addition, Jakab Tarnóczi will produce a performance entitled Radical Relax on the main stage, Gábor Máté will direct Lajos Jánossy’s Itt ét in the Kamra, while Tamás Ascher will stage Goldoni’s play Egy nýár. An adaptation of Péter Hajnóczy’s novel A hálál kilovgolt Perzsiajal is also being prepared, and Aurél Biró Zsombor, who debuted with the novel My Returning Dream, I Wake Up on My Father’s Shoulder, has written a play for the theater entitled 2031.

This year, the Katona József Theater also set a record for the number of nominations for the Theater Critics Award: Their 4 performances received a total of 8 nominationsKriszta Székely’s performance EMBTRAG based on The Tragedy of Man is also in the running for best direction. The Film Critics Award will be presented on September 17 at Trafo.
