Dagenham & Redbridge secured a 1-0 victory over Dorking Wanderers on Saturday, marking the first match since YouTuber KSI acquired a minority stake in the National League South club.
The win, witnessed by KSI alongside former England international Andy Carroll, signals a novel era for the East London side. KSI’s investment, announced last week, is part of a growing trend of “passion investors” entering football club ownership, according to Stuart Pinnington, Global Head of Asset Owners at investor services firm IQ-EQ.
Pinnington highlighted the success of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover of Wrexham as a key example of this phenomenon. Their investment has transformed the Welsh club into a global media story, demonstrating the potential for both financial return and community impact.
“Football clubs are increasingly being viewed not simply as trophy assets but as global consumer brands,” Pinnington wrote. “For investors, the appeal goes well beyond the pitch: European football offers access to vast international audiences and multiple revenue streams.”
While the potential for financial gain is significant – Reynolds and McElhenney’s investment in Wrexham could yield a 135x return – Pinnington cautioned that sports ownership is complex. He emphasized the difficulty in valuing intangible assets like brand loyalty and player talent, as well as potential hidden liabilities related to player compensation and stadium maintenance.
“Operating expenses remain high, particularly when it comes to wages and infrastructure,” Pinnington noted. “Even if a team can climb the leagues and increase the club’s value, profitability is very challenging.”
Regulatory hurdles similarly exist, with football operating under the governance of bodies like FIFA, UEFA, and the FA. Investors must navigate these regulations and understand their impact on long-term strategy. The emotional connection between clubs and their communities adds another layer of risk, as decisions are judged not only on financial merit but also on their effect on supporters and local identity.
KSI, known for his “Race to Division 1” FIFA video game content, has publicly stated his ambition to bring “glory days” back to Dagenham & Redbridge. The club’s attendance for Saturday’s match reached 2,281, an increase of 1,000 from the previous home game, indicating initial fan enthusiasm for the new ownership.
Pinnington concluded that while passion can open the door to investment, success requires rigorous due diligence, specialist expertise, and a clear understanding of the industry’s financial dynamics. The Wrexham example demonstrates that passion, profit, and positive community impact can coexist.
