December 6, 2024 — Kumon North America took a significant step towards its annual book donation goal, gifting 4,623 books to New Jersey-based charity Book Smiles this week. The generous donation, collected over several months at the company’s Rutherford headquarters, is a testament to Kumon’s dedication to literacy and community support.
More Than Just Books
“Every book loaded onto the truck represents a chance to spark curiosity, build knowledge and inspire dreams,” said Danielle Sabbagh, Kumon’s communication and event specialist, who organized the drive. “This is how we live out our mission — not just by teaching, but by giving back to our communities and helping to reduce inequalities.”
The donation from the New Jersey office is part of Kumon’s national initiative to collect and donate 50,000 books by the end of the year. In addition to the national goal, individual Kumon Centers across the U.S. and Canada are actively collecting new and gently used books for local charities that provide resources to families – such as children’s hospitals, literacy tutors, and library fundraising groups.
Opening Doors to Opportunity
“This drive isn’t just about books; it’s about opening doors to opportunity,” Sabbagh added. “At Kumon, we’re committed to making a difference and supporting the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Together, we’ve taken big steps toward quality education by putting books into the hands of children and adults who need them most.”
Kumon employees enthusiastically participated in the book drive, sorting and loading boxes onto the Book Smiles truck, ensuring these valuable resources reach those who will benefit most. The donation is sure to make a significant impact on the children and families Book Smiles serves, promoting literacy and educational opportunities within the community.
