by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Lahti, Finland – Latvian cross-country skier Patrīcija Eiduka delivered a strong performance in the sprint qualification at the World Cup event in Lahti, securing her place in the quarterfinals. The result marks a continuation of her impressive form this season, building on a near-miss at a semifinal appearance in Falun just last week. Three Latvian male skiers also competed, finishing closely together in the qualification round.

Eiduka finished 17th in the qualification round, clocking a time of +9.57 seconds behind the fastest qualifier, Sweden’s Jonna Sundling, who completed the course in 3:02.90, according to official results from the International Ski Federation (FIS). FIS provides detailed results and athlete profiles.

Strong Showing for Eiduka in Lahti

This Lahti sprint holds positive memories for Eiduka, as she reached the semifinal stage at the World Cup event there two years ago, finishing 12th overall. Her recent performance in Falun saw her finish 14th in qualification, narrowly missing out on a spot in the semifinals by a fraction of a second. The Latvian skier continues to demonstrate her growing competitiveness on the international stage.

The qualification race was dominated by Swedish skiers, with Olympic silver medalist Jonna Sundling leading the pack, 2.34 seconds ahead of Olympic champion Linn Svahn. A surprise result came from Jasmi Jonsuu of Finland, a home favorite and fourth in the overall PK sprint standings, who finished in 34th place.

Latvian Men Finish Closely in Qualification

On the men’s side, Niks Saulītis was the top Latvian finisher, securing 60th place with a time of +13.02 seconds. Raimo Vīgants and Lauris Kaparkalējs followed closely behind, finishing in 61st and 62nd place respectively, with times of +13.74 and +13.88 seconds. Kaparkalējs recently achieved a historic semifinal appearance at the U23 World Championships.

Norwegian Johannes Klēbo, the Olympic and World Champion in sprint, unsurprisingly topped the men’s qualification with a time of 2:42.32. France’s Lucas Chavanat finished second (+1.02 seconds), and Italy’s Federico Pellegrino rounded out the top three (+1.98 seconds). Looking Ahead

The World Cup in Lahti continues on Sunday with a 10-kilometer freestyle race with individual starts. Following the event in Finland, the focus will shift to Toblach, Italy, for the start of the prestigious “Tour de Ski” series in December. The cross-country skiing season promises continued competition with upcoming World Cup stages in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States, culminating in the Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo in February. TVNET reports that the Tour de Ski will begin in the final week of December.

The Latvian team will be looking to build on these performances as the season progresses. Fans can follow Patrīcija Eiduka and her teammates as they compete on the international stage. Share your thoughts on their performance in the comments below!
