The Omicron variant, XBB.1.16 has been classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of interest, according to the latest information provided by the Ministry of Health on Friday April 28.

While this variant seems to spread faster than the previous ones, it does not seem to cause more serious illnesses.

According to the WHO, the risk associated with this variant is low, which is why it has not been classified as a concern.

It should be noted that the sequencing tests carried out in Mauritius for the period from April 4 to April 10, show 51 cases of the XBB.1.5 variant and 7 positive cases of the XBB.1.16 variant.

As a reminder, during the past week, 104 Covid-19 positives were identified through PCR tests and two deaths were recorded.
