Lyon's T6 Tram Extension: Final Stretch Begins – A Game Changer for Northeast Lyon

Lyon, France – October 22, 2025 – Exciting news for commuters and urban planners alike! The highly anticipated extension of Lyon’s T6 tramway is now in its crucial final testing phase, paving the way for a February 14, 2026, launch. This €185 million project isn’t just about adding tracks; it’s about unlocking the potential of northeast Lyon and creating a more connected, vibrant urban landscape. This is a breaking news development with significant implications for the region’s future, and we’re bringing you the latest details.

Dynamic Tests Commence: Ensuring a Safe and Seamless Launch

Starting today, October 22nd, the “dynamic tests” are underway, running until mid-January 2026. These aren’t just quick checks; they’re a rigorous, three-month process designed to guarantee the safety and operational efficiency of the entire extended line. The tests will progress through three phases: initial line opening checks, comprehensive equipment validation, and performance testing – gradually increasing train speeds from 10 to 40 km/h. These tests, often conducted during the day and week, but also occasionally at night and on weekends, are vital to ensure everything from the rails to the signaling systems work in perfect harmony.

Connecting Communities: The T6 Extension's Impact

The T6 extension isn’t simply about adding a few stops. It’s a strategic move to connect four key urban centers: Hôpitaux-Est, Place Jules Grandclément, the Gratte-Ciel district, and the Lyon Tech La Doua - Insa Lyon campus. This will seamlessly integrate with existing transport networks – metros A, B, and D, trams T1, T3, T4, Rhônexpress, TB11, and future lines T9 and TB12 Part-Dieu Sept Chemins – creating a truly interconnected public transport system. Daily ridership is projected to reach 55,000 trips, easing congestion and providing convenient access to vital services and employment hubs.

Urban Renewal and the La Filature District

Beyond transportation, the T6 extension is a catalyst for urban renewal, particularly in the La Filature district. This area, undergoing a transformation from a former industrial site, will benefit immensely from the new tram station, providing quick access to the Gratte-Ciel and La Doua campus. This isn’t just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about revitalizing neighborhoods and fostering economic growth. The extension marks the first interurban tramway line in the TCL network, strengthening North/South connections for Bron, Villeurbanne, and the 3rd district of Lyon.

Preparing for Launch: Training and Community Engagement

The focus isn’t solely on the technology. SYTRAL Mobilités is actively preparing its workforce and the local community for the launch. 23 new drivers are being recruited and rigorously trained, alongside over 350 existing TCL agents who will need to familiarize themselves with the unique aspects of the extension – including navigating pedestrian areas in Villeurbanne and single-track sections. Crucially, a comprehensive safety campaign is underway, utilizing print and digital media, letters to residents, and on-screen messaging to educate the public about the new tramway and promote safe co-existence. Mediators will also be present along the route to answer questions and address concerns.

The "Dry Run" and Final Authorization

From January 14, 2026, a “dry run” period will simulate real-world operations without passengers, allowing for a final, comprehensive system check. Following this, the final authorization to put the T6 line extension into service will be issued by the prefect, officially marking the start of commercial operations on February 14, 2026. This meticulous process underscores the commitment to delivering a safe, reliable, and efficient transport solution for the people of Lyon.

The T6 extension represents a significant investment in Lyon’s future, promising to enhance connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and improve the quality of life for residents.
