The coordinators of the lawyers’ sectors for the democratic parties represented in Parliament: the Socialist Union of Popular Forces Party, the Progress and Socialism Party, the Unified Socialist Party, and the Democratic Left Federation Party, announced the establishment of a coordination within the legal body, in order to “bring down the government’s legislative attack.”

These parties considered, in a statement, that this move comes in light of “the legislative attack launched by the government through draft civil and criminal procedure laws, followed by the referral of the draft criminal law and the legal profession law, in a blatant violation of participatory democracy in drafting legislation framing human rights and guarantees for citizens.” Citizens have the right to legislation consistent with international conventions and treaties.”

The same authorities affirmed that “this legislative attack on the legal profession constitutes an unprecedented human rights setback and constitutional apostasy,” stressing that “dropping” the aforementioned projects “necessitates the rapid formation of a national front to combat the legislative and legal setback.”

The aforementioned communication stated that “the National Coordination of Male and Female Democratic Party Lawyers, as it announces its establishment, brings together all initiatives that aim to overthrow the government’s legislative attack,” and “confirms its support for freedom of opinion and expression within the professional space through initiatives aimed at defending the profession and its human rights roles.”

The coordination components called for unified action in order to “preserve the legal profession’s lofty status and its constitutional and historical position in defending democracy in the Kingdom,” as well as to approve “legislation that takes into account the vital and legal role of the defense mission and guarantees the right of the citizen, male and female, to the basic guarantees of justice.”
