Lebanon Conflict: Rising Death Toll & Calls for Intervention | Israel & Iran War Impact

Beirut – Lebanon is appealing to the international community for intervention as the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran continues to devastate the country. Authorities report that more than 630 people have been killed in Lebanon over the past week, including at least 91 children, as the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran draws the nation deeper into a regional crisis. The mounting casualties and widespread displacement are prompting urgent calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance.

The situation in Lebanon has rapidly deteriorated following increased hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group. Israel has launched extensive airstrikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure, particularly in the southern suburbs of Beirut, even as Hezbollah has responded with rocket and drone attacks into northern Israel. The exchange of fire has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis, with over 810,000 people – a quarter of them children – uprooted from their homes, according to Lebanese officials.

Israel Expands Operations, Threatens Further Escalation

Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, announced on Thursday that the military would expand its operations into Lebanon following Hezbollah’s attacks. This escalation follows the heaviest night of bombing of Beirut since the conflict began ten days ago, with Israeli jets striking the Bachoura neighborhood multiple times. At least 12 people were killed and 28 wounded in a strike along Beirut’s waterfront, where displaced families were sheltering, according to reports. The military has also doubled the zone in southern Lebanon residents are being urged to evacuate, extending it to the Zahrani River.

The conflict’s expansion is raising fears of a wider regional war. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for a joint attack with Hezbollah on Israel, stating that five hours of sustained fire struck more than 50 targets across Israel, CNN reported. Simultaneously, attacks in the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted shipping, with at least three cargo vessels hit by projectiles, impacting the global oil supply and driving up prices.

Lebanon Seeks Diplomatic Resolution

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has sought urgent talks with Israel to halt the strikes and de-escalate the conflict. However, with Israel signaling an expansion of military operations, the prospects for a swift diplomatic resolution remain uncertain. Lebanon has “long warned” against being drawn into a wider conflict, according to Anadolu Ajansı, but the current situation demonstrates the difficulty of remaining neutral amidst regional tensions.

The situation is further complicated by the condition of Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, who reportedly suffered a fractured foot and other minor injuries in the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes, a source familiar with the situation told CNN. His limited public appearances since assuming the role have fueled speculation about the leadership’s stability.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The United Nations is warning of a mounting humanitarian crisis, citing toxic black rain, mass displacement, and disrupted supply chains for essential goods. The conflict is impacting critical infrastructure and exacerbating existing economic challenges in Lebanon, which was already grappling with a severe economic downturn. Canada has pledged over $37 million in aid to Lebanon, and Prime Minister Mark Carney stated Ottawa will “do everything it can” to facilitate stabilize the global energy market, CBC News reported.

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial artery for global oil supply, has been effectively closed by Iran, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through it. While oil prices have risen, Iran is reportedly getting more oil onto tankers now than before the war, suggesting attempts to mitigate the economic impact.

As the conflict enters its twelfth day, the situation remains volatile. The international community is closely monitoring developments, with concerns growing that the conflict could spiral further out of control. The focus now shifts to whether diplomatic efforts can succeed in securing a ceasefire and preventing further escalation, and what role Israel’s allies will play in mediating a resolution.
