Airstrikes resumed on March 2, 2026, between Hezbollah and Israel, escalating tensions following the recent war with Iran and the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to reports.
The renewed hostilities represent a further deterioration in the already volatile security situation in the region. The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which began on October 8, 2023, has seen a significant escalation in recent months, culminating in an Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2024. While a ceasefire was agreed upon on November 26, 2024, sporadic fighting has continued, and the latest exchange of fire signals a potential return to more intense conflict.
The resumption of airstrikes comes after a period of heightened instability triggered by the war with Iran. Iranian state media reported on March 12, 2026, that the country’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, vowed to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed and maintain attacks on U.S. Bases in the region. This declaration, coupled with attacks on commercial ships extending into Iraqi waters, has contributed to a surge in global oil prices, exceeding $100 a barrel.
According to reports, over 1,300 people have been killed in Iran, 687 in Lebanon, and 12 in Israel as a result of the conflict. Seven U.S. Soldiers have died, with eight sustaining serious injuries, primarily from attacks targeting U.S. Bases in countries neighboring Iran. The United Nations refugee agency estimates that as many as 3.2 million Iranians have been displaced from their homes due to the war.
Hezbollah, along with allies including Amal, the Islamic Group, the SSNP-L, Hamas, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Islamic Resistance in Iraq, the Houthis, Iran, and Syria (until 2024), are involved in the conflict. Israeli commanders and leaders involved include Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel Katz, Yoav Gallant, Eyal Zamir, Herzi Halevi, Ori Gordin, and Tomer Bar. Hezbollah units involved include the Lebanese Resistance Brigades, Redwan Force, Imam Hussein Division, Badr Unit, Aziz Unit, Nasr Unit, Rocket and Missile Unit, Air defense unit, Engineering unit, Drone Unit, Syrian Hezbollah, Amal military wing Al-Abbas Force, Fajr Forces, Khaled Ali unit, and Eagles of the Whirlwind.
The situation remains fluid, with no immediate indication of de-escalation. Sporadic fighting continues, and the potential for further escalation remains high.
