LeBron James Breaks NBA Record for Most Field Goals Made | Lakers News

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Denver – LeBron James continues to etch his name into the NBA record books, reaching yet another milestone in a career defined by them. On Thursday night, during a 120-113 loss to the Denver Nuggets, James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the league’s all-time leader in field goals made. This latest achievement adds to his existing record as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, further solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

With 12.3 seconds remaining in the first quarter, James connected on a turnaround baseline jump shot over Zeke Nnaji, marking his 15,838th career field goal and surpassing Abdul-Jabbar’s previous record. The historic basket came in James’s 21st NBA season, a testament to his longevity and consistent excellence. This accomplishment underscores James’s remarkable ability to adapt and thrive throughout his career, consistently adding to his already impressive resume.

James previously broke Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record on February 7, 2023, with a step-back jump shot that brought his career point total to 38,388. ESPN reports that James has since extended that total to over 43,000 points, further distancing himself from his predecessor. The consistent accumulation of points and now, field goals, highlights James’s sustained dominance in the league.

“Just to be able to link my name to being mentioned with some of the greatest to ever play this game has always been humbling and a pretty cool thing,” James said after the game, as reported by TSN. “I grew up watching, reading [about], idolizing a lot of the greats, and if I ever was able to be part of the NBA, I wanted to put myself in position that I can be named with some of the greats by doing something right. So, it’s pretty cool.”

The Evolution of a Signature Shot

James noted that the turnaround fadeaway shot, the incredibly one that secured the record, was a move he specifically developed after struggling in the 2011 NBA Finals with the Miami Heat. “I mean, it’s one of my patented shots,” James explained. “It’s something I’ve worked on throughout my career. So, to be able to have that ability to make that shot is pretty cool.” This demonstrates James’s dedication to refining his skills and adding new dimensions to his game, even after achieving significant success.

The Lakers, despite the historic achievement, fell to the Nuggets 120-113. James finished the game with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. While the loss tempered the celebratory mood, it did little to diminish the significance of James’s accomplishment.

Beyond the Record: A Career of Milestones

Earlier this season, James also surpassed Michael Cooper for fifth place on the Lakers’ all-time assists list and joined Kobe Bryant as the only other player in franchise history to reach 1,000 three-pointers made. These achievements demonstrate James’s well-rounded game and his impact on all facets of the sport.

Looking ahead, James is within reach of another NBA record: Robert Parish’s mark of 1,611 games played. Currently, James has appeared in 1,606 games and could surpass Parish on March 16th against the Houston Rockets, provided he plays in all of the Lakers’ upcoming games. CBS Sports reports this is the next major milestone within his grasp.

Lakers coach JJ Redick offered a fitting analogy, comparing James to Bruce Springsteen. “I’m a big Bruce Springsteen fan,” Redick said before the loss. “I would probably say his early albums really get me going…and then he comes out with ‘The Rising,’ which is one of the most important albums of the 2000s. So, you get to the end and you’re like, ‘Holy s— this guy’s greatest hits are like insane.’ And LeBron’s greatest hits, he just keeps adding to them.”

LeBron James’s relentless pursuit of excellence and his continued ability to add to his already legendary career make him a captivating figure in the world of sports. As he continues to play, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see what records he breaks next.
