Geneva (awp) – Battery manufacturer Leclanché will deliver a lithium-ion battery and solar energy system to the island of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean. The local government and the electricity company St. Kitts Electric Company (Skelec) have signed a contract with Solec Power, a subsidiary of the Vaudois group.

The new installation will have solar power of 35.7 megawatts peak (MWp), corresponding to 30-35% of the island’s annual electricity consumption, and an accumulator of 43.6 megawatt hours, according to a press release published Monday.

It will save around 15.1 million liters of diesel per year and reduce costs by up to 40%. Work is due to begin in the second quarter of 2024 and the plant is due to start delivering electricity from 2025.

Financial details of this order have not been detailed. In 2020, when this project was announced, it was estimated at $70 million.
