I’ve lost sight of how I originally conceived of her. She owns that role now so much, and she’s getting her own show based on it, which is thoroughly deserved.”

Another change involves Reacher’s daring escape from a house on the Maine coast. “Reacher is in a house on the Maine coast, and it is on a promontory surrounded on three sides by the sea and a wall on the fourth side — it’s a very hard house to get into. It’s even harder to get out of,” Child says. “In the book,how does Reacher get out? Well,he swims. And how does he swim without getting soaking wet? He puts all his clothes in a plastic bag and ties it tight and carries it with him. But he swims naked.”

The screen adaptation opted for a slightly less revealing approach. Child recalls wondering if Ritchson was going to get fully naked for the big escape. “I thought, ‘How are they going to do that on TV?'” he says. “No, he swims in his underwear. So that’s one of the changes, but that’s worth seeing.”
