Breaking: President Lee Jae-Myung Heads to G7 Summit in Canada

June 16, 2025 – In a significant move, President Lee Jae-Myung will travel to Canada on Monday to participate in the G7 Summit, marking his first international appearance just days after taking office. This trip is seen as a critical step in reaffirming South Korea’s diplomatic standing on the global stage.

Lee’s International Debut Amidst Political Turmoil

President Lee Jae-Myung is set to attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17. This three-day trip comes less than two weeks after his investiture, making it a pivotal moment for his administration. The summit will provide Lee with an opportunity to showcase South Korea’s return to democratic governance following the political instability caused by the failed martial law attempt under former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

“This will be an opportunity to show the return of the Republic of Korea to democracy on the international scene while overcoming the political crisis caused by the establishment of martial law,” said National Security Advisor Wa Sung-Lac during a press briefing on Sunday.

Pragmatic Diplomacy on Display

Lee’s administration has emphasized pragmatic diplomacy focused on national interests. The G7 Summit will serve as a test for this approach as he engages with world leaders amidst intensifying global challenges, including trade tensions, strategic rivalry between the U.S. and China, and military ties between Russia and North Korea.

“It will be a good opportunity (for the president) to take the first step towards pragmatic diplomacy focusing on national interests,” said an official. “It will be an opportunity for him to quickly build the confidence by meeting in person the leaders of the main countries, only 10 days after taking office.”

Key Meetings and Bilateral Relations

The spotlight will be on Lee’s potential first in-person meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Topics on the agenda include trade negotiations, troop maintenance costs, and coordination with North Korea and China.

“Lee’s position is to respond to these challenges through close coordination with the United States. If the two leaders meet, the meeting should give the necessary momentum to advance the negotiations,” said an official.

Additionally, Lee seeks to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, with whom he recently reaffirmed bilateral relations over the phone. A trilateral meeting with Trump and Ishiba is also on the cards, underscoring the importance of the U.S.-South Korea-Japan alliance in regional security.

Navigating Complex Geopolitics

Lee’s approach to China will be closely watched, especially given the G7’s increasingly firm stance against Beijing’s assertiveness. Balancing relations with the U.S., a longstanding ally, and China, South Korea’s largest trading partner, will be a delicate task.

“We will coordinate and cooperate with the G7 countries, but we also intend to damage relations with China and Russia,” said an official.
