Legal Battle: Muslim Executive of Belgium vs Minister of Justice Van Quickenborne

2023-08-03 17:56:13

The civil court of Brussels postponed, Thursday, the procedure brought by the Executive of the Muslims of Belgium (EMB) once morest the Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) to August 14. This is a relay date, intended to set the dates for pleadings. The EMB cited the minister in court, denouncing “arbitrary interference in the organization of Muslim worship” on his part.

This legal action had been launched before Vincent Van Quickenbrone withdrew the recognition of the EMB by the Belgian State, by royal decree of September 29, 2022, considering that it was no longer representative of the Muslim communities. He appointed a Muslim Council of Belgium in his place. In the meantime, the EMB Board is in charge of day-to-day business, but no more subsidies are granted to it.

The EMB deplores this situation as well as the fact that the Bureau is kept away from certain meetings. “Officers have learned […] that, on March 3, 2023, a meeting aimed at discussing the representation of Muslims in Belgium was organized on the initiative of the Minister, in the presence of the various religions represented in Belgium and secularism […] The Office is thus excluded from its own missions”.
