Leo Merle VI: Para Athlete Takes Gold in 1,500m T38 Class at Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games

The United States Para athlete Leo Merle VI took first place and the gold medal in the 1,500 meters class T38 (limitations of movement in the lower torso and legs) in the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.

The winner clocked 4’12”62 to beat Canadian Liam Stanley by almost a second, who took silver (4’13”60). Colombian Johnier Gómez took bronze (4’26”15).

“I feel great. At the beginning of the race I got a little nervous, but now I am very excited regarding this achievement, I enjoyed it a lot,” commented the new Parapan American champion.

“The Chilean public was incredible, They were already shouting when we went out to compete and when we reached the finish line. Feeling that I thought, ‘This is amazing!’” she added.

The list of athletes was completed by the Nicaraguan Carlos Alberto Castillo, who with great effort earned the satisfaction of reaching the finish line with a time of 4’57”50.
