Placed under the sign “All united against AIDS”, the 8th edition of Sidaction Maroc comes in the midst of a pandemic. Organized by the Association for the Fight against AIDS (ALCS), the purpose of this event is to raise funds for the care of patients and offer them the necessary social support, but also to strengthen scientific research in this field.
FAs he reminded, the Ministry of Health estimates that 21,500 people are living with HIV in Morocco, of whom 6,000 do not yet know their serological status.
In 2019, out of 850 new HIV infections, 34% were among young people (15 and 24 years old).
Faced with this situation, awareness raising and general mobilization are more than ever on the agenda.
“We must support the sick, especially during this pandemic period. The AIDS epidemic did not stop during the period of covid-19, quite the contrary. The Association has indirectly participated in relieving patients with HIV. During confinement, for example, patients could not travel to the hospital to take their medication. Thus, thanks to the therapeutic mediator of the ALCS, they were able to receive their treatment at home or by mail. Stopping treatment can have dramatic consequences, as it creates resistance to treatment and the person becomes contagious again. It’s very complex, ”said Prof. Mehdi Karkouri, president of the ALCS, during a press briefing held yesterday in Casablanca.
The ALCS has, in this regard, set 4 objectives, namely to raise awareness among people, especially young people, to encourage HIV testing, to fight against the stigmatization of virus carriers and, of course, to collect funds to prevent disease and care for people with HIV.
According to Prof. Mehdi Karkouri, “the efforts of the ALCS, civil society organizations and the Ministry of Health have reduced the number of new infections by 30%. We are the only country in the region (North Africa) to have reduced the number of HIV carriers, in comparison with other countries in the region where it is clearly increasing. It’s a victory, but we must continue the fight… ”, he concludes.
Remember that December 1 is World AIDS Day.
Several activities are planned over a period of one month to raise public awareness. The evening of Sidaction Maroc 2020 will take place on the 2nd national channel (2M) on December 19.
