Bayer Leverkusen started the Champions League season with a landslide victory. The German football champions beat Feyenoord Rotterdam 4-0 (4-0) on Thursday. Young star Florian Wirtz shone on his CL debut with a brace (6th, 36th). ÖFB team player Gernot Trauner played his first game from the start for Feyenoord after suffering from thigh problems since the European Championships in Germany three months ago.

Wirtz gave Leverkusen an early lead with a long-range shot. After that, Feyenoord had more possession, but were mercilessly countered by Bayer in their own stadium. Jeremie Frimpong assisted on Alejandro Grimaldo’s goal (30′) and on Wirtz’s second goal. Trauner was shown a yellow card for a foul on Grimaldo, and Edmond Tapsoba headed the resulting free kick cross into the middle. Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther then put the ball into his own goal (45′).

Feyenoord pushed for a consolation goal after the break. Trauner came close to scoring after a set piece, but was brought down by Robert Andrich in the penalty area. The DFB team player hit the Upper Austrian on the shin, but due to an earlier offside position, no penalty was awarded (67th minute). Benfica Lisbon won 2-1 (2-0) against Red Star Belgrade. The goals for Portugal’s runners-up were scored by the Turks Kerem Aktürkoglu (9th minute) and Orkun Kökcü (29th minute).
