Levin Crash: Two Dead, SH57 Closed – Road Toll Rises

A two-vehicle crash in the early hours of Monday morning near Levin has claimed the lives of two people, bringing the national road toll to eight in just 48 hours. Emergency services responded to the incident on State Highway 57 at approximately 2:30 am, according to a police spokesperson.

The crash occurred on State Highway 57, a key route linking State Highway 1 north of Ohau to State Highway 3 east of Ashhurst, via Levin and Palmerston North, as detailed by New Zealand’s State Highway 57 route information. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, and the Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination following the incident.

State Highway 57 remains closed between State Highway 1 and Tararua Road, causing significant disruption for commuters. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises motorists to utilize alternative routes and allow for extended travel times. The closure is impacting traffic flow in the Horowhenua region, and updates are being provided through the NZTA’s journey planning website.

St John Ambulance has been contacted for comment regarding the incident, but has not yet released further details. The double fatality adds to a concerning weekend on New Zealand roads, following a series of crashes on Sunday that resulted in six deaths and multiple injuries. This recent surge in fatalities has prompted renewed focus on road safety across the country.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is currently reviewing speed limits on highways near Levin, including State Highway 57, following previous reductions implemented by the former Labour-led government. A consultation process was initiated last year after speed limits were increased from 80 kilometers per hour, with over half of submissions supporting the change, according to reporting from 1News. However, concerns remain within the local community regarding safety.

Recent discussions have centered on the appropriateness of the 100km/h speed limit, particularly in light of a fatality occurring since the increase. Between 2020 and 2025, when the speed limit was 80km/h, no deaths were recorded on the same stretch of road. NZTA is also considering variable speed limits near Tukorehe Marae and Wehi Wehi Marae, responding to feedback from local iwi and freight operators.

Perform is also planned for the intersection of State Highway 57 and Tararua Road in Levin, with stop/go traffic management scheduled to be in place next month ahead of the construction of a new roundabout, as announced by NZTA in a media release. This project aims to improve safety at a known intersection point.

Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving, adhere to speed limits, and remain vigilant on the roads. The investigation into Monday’s crash is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.

As investigations continue and safety reviews are undertaken, the focus remains on preventing further tragedies on New Zealand roads. Motorists are encouraged to check for updates on road conditions and closures before commencing their journeys.
