Liège’s stance on Israel-Palestine conflict: Condemning Hamas Attacks and Ensuring International Humanitarian Law Compliance

2023-10-13 15:48:00

Last April, Liège decided to break all relations with Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The position of the City, the day following the attack on Israel by Hamas, was therefore firmly awaited. And it was somewhat overdue, especially from other political groups who pointed out the ambiguous position of the socialists.

This Friday, Willy Demeyer therefore spoke officially, in a press release. “I condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks by Hamas and Islamic Jihad once morest the Israeli civilian population,” he wrote. This violence and hostage-taking, of unspeakable cruelty, cannot in any way be defended or explained. The first victims of these attacks are the Israeli populations. This aggression also has tragic consequences for the entire Palestinian population. All parties involved must strictly respect international humanitarian law.”
