LifeFit Group Acquires Just Fit: Fitness Chain Expands in Germany

The German fitness landscape is shifting as LifeFit Group, a leading fitness and health platform, has finalized the acquisition of Just Fit, a regional powerhouse with 21 studios across the Rhine-Erft district and the Cologne region. The move expands LifeFit’s portfolio to over 230 clubs and more than 720,000 members, solidifying its position as a major player in the German fitness market. The acquisition remains subject to antitrust approval, and the financial terms have not been disclosed. This significant development signals a new chapter for both companies.

Founded in 2002 by Frank Böhme, along with Hans Schwarzenberg, Jörg Böhme, and Michael Böhme, Just Fit quickly became known for its commitment to accessible fitness. The company, based in Frechen, Germany, currently serves approximately 45,000 members. Böhme, widely regarded as a pioneer in the fitness industry with over 40 years of experience, aimed to craft fitness attainable for everyone, regardless of budget. The acquisition represents a strategic move for LifeFit Group, allowing them to tap into Just Fit’s established regional presence and loyal customer base.

According to a statement released by LifeFit Group, the original owners decided to transfer their Just Fit studios to the group after careful consideration. They believe this decision is in the best interest of their legacy, employees, and members. Martin Seibold, CEO of LifeFit Group, emphasized the importance of Frank Böhme’s contributions to the industry, stating, “Anyone who works in the fitness industry knows the pioneer Frank Böhme. He has shaped the industry like hardly anyone else. The takeover of the life’s work of the four shareholders of Just Fit means for us to take responsibility for the employees, members, and studios.”

LifeFit Group’s Plans for Just Fit

LifeFit Group intends to preserve the strengths of Just Fit, including its diverse course offerings, strong local community, and broad appeal, while simultaneously introducing new branding, modern training concepts, and the synergies of the national Fitness First network. Seibold explained that the company will integrate the facilities step-by-step, focusing on enhancing the studios while maintaining their core values. The headquarters of Just Fit, located on Ernst-Heinrich-Geist-Straße in Frechen, will be transformed into a flagship studio for Fitness First, with the sports area being more than doubled in size.

The transition will also see the four founding partners step down from the company after a transitional period. Böhme expressed a positive sentiment about the sale, stating, “Giving our life’s work Just Fit into the trustworthy and experienced hands of the LifeFit Group gives me a very good feeling. This way, the best of Just Fit is preserved in many facets and can be consistently developed further.” He also noted that there were more than eight interested parties, but the priority was to ensure a positive future for the employees and the continuation of their jobs.

Changes and Closures in Frechen

Alongside the acquisition, some changes are planned for Just Fit’s physical locations in Frechen. The studio on Bonnstrasse, which has been a location for the company since 1992, is slated for demolition at the complete of the year. Böhme lamented the loss of the site, explaining that the lease was not renewed after four years of attempts to secure its continuation. He described the location as the birthplace of his success, built entirely through family effort.

the LifeFit Group will restructure the company’s headquarters on Ernst-Heinrich-Geist-Straße. The central administration will be relocated, and the sports area of the existing studio will be expanded to create the aforementioned flagship Fitness First location.

Böhme’s Continued Ventures

Frank Böhme has a history of successful ventures in the fitness industry, including Take-off Studios and Interfit, Europe’s first fitness aggregator. Both businesses were sold previously. Currently, Böhme is focused on “Next door,” a concept launched in 2020 featuring unmanned studios equipped with high-quality equipment and on-demand live coaching. There are currently eleven “Next door” studios in Cologne, with plans to add six to seven more this year, and a broader nationwide expansion is envisioned. Böhme believes these plans will ease his transition away from Just Fit, which he affectionately refers to as his “massive baby.”

LifeFit Group’s brand portfolio also includes Fitness First BLACK and RED, offering varying levels of service and training concepts, as well as Barry’s, a pioneer in high-intensity interval training. The acquisition of Just Fit further diversifies their offerings and strengthens their market position.

The integration of Just Fit into the LifeFit Group is expected to bring new opportunities for members and employees alike. As the fitness industry continues to evolve, this acquisition demonstrates a commitment to innovation and growth. The coming months will be crucial as LifeFit Group implements its plans and shapes the future of Just Fit within its broader network.

What impact will the rebranding and integration of Fitness First’s network have on Just Fit’s existing members? Only time will tell, but the LifeFit Group appears committed to building on the foundation of success that Frank Böhme and his partners established over two decades ago.
