Lithuania will contribute to the Czech initiative to buy ammunition for Ukraine, says the Prime Minister

The Prime Minister discussed this by phone with her Czech counterpart Petar Fiala, the Government reported.

“This is a very important initiative, especially in this period, when the supply of ammunition to Ukraine has slowed down,” I. Šimonytė said in the report.

Within the framework of the mentioned initiative, the countries participate in the joint purchase and transfer of ammunition to Ukraine, identifying possible ammunition reserves or sources of rapid production for acquisition.

The Czech Republic said as late as February that it had international support, including from Canada and Denmark, to finance the rapid purchase of hundreds of thousands of munitions from third countries to help Ukraine, which is awaiting military support on the battlefield.

Such an initiative was announced following the European Union (EU) failed to extend its promise to send one million artillery shells to Ukraine, which is resisting the Russian invasion, by March 1.

During the telephone conversation, the Prime Ministers of Lithuania and the Czech Republic also discussed the security situation in the region, the importance of increasing investments in defense in Europe and the determination to strengthen the bilateral relations between Lithuania and the Czech Republic, the Government stated.
