Loch Varella Named MAAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Again | Siena Saints

Latham, NY – Siena College sophomore Bruno Loch Varella has been recognized as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Wednesday. The award acknowledges Varella’s dominant performance over the past week, contributing to a successful stretch for the Saints’ men’s tennis program.

Varella, a native of São Paulo, Brazil, earned the honor based on his performance in Siena’s recent victories against Holy Cross and Colgate. The Saints secured a 5-0 win over Holy Cross on Saturday and followed it up with a 4-2 victory against Colgate, marking their third consecutive team win and improving their overall record to 3-4 for the 2025-2026 season. The MAAC Player of the Week award is determined by a vote of the conference’s sports information directors.

Dominating Performance on the Court

During the two matches, Varella showcased his skill in both doubles and singles play. Partnering with Serbia’s Mateja Stefanovic, he secured a win at the No. 3 doubles position against Colgate’s Jerome Falcon and Parker McGowan. In singles competition, Varella defeated Tim Vargas of Colgate 7-5, 6-2 from the fourth singles position, and Colton Parker of Holy Cross 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 4 slot. He also teamed with Stefanovic to win their doubles match against Parker and Will Donnelly of Holy Cross with a score of 6-3.

Varella’s recent successes have boosted his individual season record to 7-4 in singles play and 7-3 in doubles matches. This consistent performance has been a key factor in the Saints’ recent winning streak. The Siena Saints men’s tennis team is currently building momentum as they prepare for the remainder of their spring schedule.

Looking Ahead: Saints Host Le Moyne

The Siena Saints will return to action on Saturday, February 21st, hosting Le Moyne College at Tri-City Fitness in Latham, New York. Le Moyne currently holds a record of 0-3 for the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. And represents an opportunity for the Saints to continue their winning momentum against a challenging opponent. Fans can follow the Saints’ progress throughout the season on the Siena Saints official athletics website.

Varella’s consistent performance and leadership are expected to be crucial as the Saints navigate their remaining schedule. The team’s success will depend on maintaining this level of play and building on the positive results achieved in recent matches.
