Logan Paul’s Pokémon Card Sells for Record $16.5 Million

The world of Pokémon card collecting witnessed a seismic shift this week as a rare Pikachu Illustrator card, once owned by social media star and wrestler Logan Paul, sold for a record-breaking $16.5 million. The sale, finalized Monday at Goldin Auctions after 41 days of bidding, marks the highest price ever paid for a trading card at auction, solidifying the card’s status as a coveted “Holy Grail” for collectors.

Paul initially acquired the Pikachu Illustrator card in July 2021 for $5.275 million, a figure that already set a Guinness World Record for the most expensive Pokémon card sold in a private sale at the time. The recent auction price more than tripled his initial investment, demonstrating the soaring value of rare Pokémon cards and the growing interest in the hobby. The surge in popularity is, in part, attributed to figures like Paul, who began publicly unboxing cards during the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the hobby to a wider audience.

The Pikachu Illustrator card is exceptionally rare, with only an estimated 40 copies ever printed. These cards were not available for purchase and were instead awarded to winners of an illustration contest held in Japan in 1998. The card features the iconic Pokémon mascot Pikachu holding a pen and feather, designed by Atsuko Nishida, the artist behind many popular Pokémon characters.

What set Paul’s card apart was its pristine condition, earning it a perfect 10 grade from Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA). According to Polygon, Paul’s card is the only Pikachu Illustrator card to achieve this “virtually perfect” rating. Adding to its allure, the card was encased in a custom-designed, diamond-studded necklace and worn by Paul during his entrance at WrestleMania 38 in 2022.

The winning bid came from venture capitalist A.J. Scaramucci, son of former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. Scaramucci, described as being on a quest to collect “the uncollectable,” reportedly has ambitious plans beyond Pokémon cards, including acquiring a T-Rex dinosaur fossil and even the Declaration of Independence, as reported by People.

The auction process itself was noteworthy. Bidding opened on January 5th, earlier than initially planned due to “overwhelming global interest,” according to Goldin Auctions. The price escalated rapidly within the first week, jumping from $500,000 to $4.3 million. While the price plateaued briefly, it ultimately soared to the final record-breaking amount.

The sale was even featured in Season 3 of Netflix’s “King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch,” further amplifying the event’s reach. Guinness World Records adjudicator Sarah Casson was present at the auction’s closure, livestreamed on YouTube, to officially confirm the new record. Paul himself playfully placed the card around Scaramucci’s neck after the winning bid was announced.

The Pokémon card market has experienced significant growth in recent years. While a standard pack of Pokémon cards typically costs around $5 for 10 cards, the value of rare cards has skyrocketed. CNN reported that Paul’s initial purchase five years ago proved to be a sound investment, highlighting the potential for substantial returns in the collectible card market.

As the Pokémon card market continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether this record will be surpassed. However, the sale of Logan Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator card has undoubtedly cemented its place in collecting history and sparked renewed interest in the hobby. The future of collectible card auctions will likely be closely watched by enthusiasts and investors alike.
