American scientists found that people who took proton pump inhibitors for 4.5 years or longer had a higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who did not drink such pills. As the authors of the study, whose results were published in the journal Neurology, clarify, their study does not prove that heartburn medications cause dementia, but only shows an association.
