The world of “One Piece” is expanding beyond the Grand Line, with its stars diving into the vibrant sounds of Latin music. In an exclusive conversation, Iñaki Godoy, who portrays Monkey D. Luffy, and Taz Skylar, who plays Sanji, revealed the musical tastes they believe their characters would embrace, offering a fascinating glimpse into the personalities behind the live-action adaptation.
As the highly anticipated second season of “One Piece” approaches its release on Netflix, Godoy and Skylar have been actively engaging with fans and promoting the series through unique events. From Godoy’s participation in Mexican lucha libre to both actors’ appearance at the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan – where Godoy even threw out a pitch – they’ve been immersing themselves in experiences that connect with the show’s global fanbase. These promotional efforts, alongside traditional press engagements, have provided insights into their interpretations of Luffy, and Sanji.
During a recent interview at Netflix’s studios in Hollywood, California on February 26, the actors were asked to curate playlists for their characters, focusing on Latin artists. Godoy’s vision for Luffy’s musical preferences surprised many, steering clear of contemporary chart-toppers. “I think Luffy would vibe with mariachis and stuff like that, I guess because he likes the instruments and the sounds of it,” Godoy explained. “I don’t think he would like stuff like José José because it’s too sad for him. I think he would like the uplifting music about partying.”
Skylar playfully interjected, suggesting Bad Bunny as a potential favorite for Luffy. However, Godoy remained firm in his belief that Luffy’s tastes would lean towards more traditional, celebratory sounds. “Bad Bunny? Uhhh, you think that? I think he’s more into ‘El mariachi loco quiere bailar,’ or like ‘Ya llego Sergio el Bailador,’ like wedding music—I think that’s what Luffy likes. Like whatever they play at weddings, like when they’re dancing to like the cumbias and all that stuff.”
Sanji’s Salsa Sensibilities
Although Luffy’s playlist leans towards lively, communal music, Sanji’s tastes are more refined. Skylar believes his character would be drawn to the smooth rhythms of Cuban salsa. He highlighted the music of Fresto, playing the song “Me Hace Daño Verte” as an example of the tropical vibe that would resonate with Sanji. “¡Un temazo! [What a song!],” Skylar exclaimed, demonstrating his enthusiasm for the artist.
The actors’ insights offer a unique perspective on the characters they portray, revealing how their understanding of Luffy and Sanji extends beyond the script to encompass their imagined cultural preferences. This attention to detail adds another layer of depth to the already beloved “One Piece” universe.
“One Piece: Into the Grand Line” is currently available for streaming on Netflix, offering fans the opportunity to experience the live-action adaptation and further explore the world of Luffy, Sanji, and their crew. As the series continues to gain momentum, the cast’s engagement with fans and their thoughtful interpretations of the characters promise to keep the adventure alive.
