Lulu Sun was considered a great hope for the future of Switzerland. But now the 22-year-old has decided to change nations. She will play for New Zealand in the future, so no longer under the Swiss flag.

Sun is the daughter of a Croatian and Chinese father and was born in New Zealand. Accordingly, in addition to the Swiss passport, she also has one from New Zealand. She explains her move as follows: “Growing up in Switzerland, I carry love for both countries in my heart. For me, representing New Zealand is more than just a professional decision, it is a recognition of my roots.”

With the change, their chances of taking part in the Olympic Games have increased. She immediately becomes number one in New Zealand tennis. In Switzerland she was number three and had little chance of qualifying. Now she might take a continental quota place.

Sun is currently ranked 151st in the world. Earlier this year she reached the second round as a qualifier at the WTA tournament in Auckland. She also made it into the main draw of the Australian Open.
