Man Weighs 170kg & Enters Ironman 70.3: His Extreme Transformation Journey

Jakub Chládek, a 33-year-old man from the Czech Republic, is embarking on a remarkable journey of physical and mental transformation, documented in the latest season of the show Extrémní proměny (Extreme Makeover). Weighing in at 170 kilograms (approximately 375 pounds), Jakub is facing a daunting challenge: to drastically improve his health and complete the Ironman 70.3 Hradec Králové, a grueling endurance race consisting of a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike ride, and a 21.1-kilometer run.

The road to this ambitious goal is paved with years of unhealthy habits and a complex emotional landscape. Jakub’s story is one of a sedentary lifestyle, fueled by readily available, unhealthy food and a demanding job as a dispatcher for an international trucking company in Germany. His daily commute, nearly three hours each way, often involves indulging in donuts, sausages in rolls, half a liter of energy drinks, and sugary sodas. This pattern, coupled with a history of emotional eating, has led to a critical point where Jakub fears for his future and his relationships.

Jakub’s mother, Lenka, believes the roots of his struggles extend back to his childhood, revealing she gave birth to him at just 16 years old. “He just ate and ate and ate. When I didn’t want him to eat anymore and tried to correct it, I found out he was sneaking food,” she shared on the program, highlighting a long-standing pattern of unhealthy eating habits. Jakub himself admits to a cycle of immediate gratification followed by regret, stating, “I like to buy chocolate, nuts, chips, and it all disappears in ten minutes. Then I feel so bad that I curse myself, but I do the same thing the next day.”

The impact of Jakub’s weight extends beyond his physical health, deeply affecting his family life. His wife, Lucie, describes a relationship lacking in shared activity, stating, “He was lazy and always liked to lie on the television. I was the one who was running around, whether with the kids or around him.” Lucie expresses concern that their children are growing up without experiencing an active life with their father, lamenting, “The kids are growing up and will remember him like this. Children remember exactly the things they can’t do with you. You didn’t teach them to ride a bike, you didn’t go with them on cars, to the fair, on a roller coaster.”

Facing a personal crisis, Jakub acknowledges the toll his lifestyle has taken. “I haven’t seen myself fully in the mirror for five years,” he confessed. “I realize that time is slipping through my fingers. And the American dream of a house, family, dog, and car is crumbling. I don’t want to end up like my father. I don’t want to be without children, I don’t want to be the man who is divorced. I want to manage it and find a way for us to be happy. I have to lose weight to be able to offer all this, and not just die on the couch. I see a broken and fat man who doesn’t appreciate what he has. I glance like a big sack of crap who is capable of nothing, couldn’t change anything, and can blame himself.”

Trainer Martin Košťál initiated the challenge by setting a simple, yet revealing, first task: to reach him from a distance of half a kilometer within four and a half minutes. While Jakub struggled, taking six and a half minutes to complete the short distance – even downhill – Košťál recognized his effort. “I didn’t expect Jakub to be in such bad shape. Half a kilometer, six and a half minutes, and it was all downhill. It’s crazy. But I saw mainly that Kuba fought,” Košťál commented.

The Ironman 70.3 Challenge

In a surprising turn, Košťál has entered Jakub into the Ironman 70.3 Hradec Králové, believing he has been underestimated. This race, encompassing 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling, and a 21.1-kilometer run, represents an extraordinary challenge, even for seasoned athletes. Jakub acknowledges the magnitude of the task, stating, “I expect the unexpected.”

The upcoming episodes of Extrémní proměny will document Jakub’s journey, exploring not only his physical transformation but also the strain on his relationships and his internal struggle to overcome years of unhealthy habits. The show aims to answer whether Jakub can conquer the seemingly insurmountable Ironman challenge and rebuild his life.

As Jakub prepares for this monumental undertaking, the series promises a raw and honest portrayal of the challenges of weight loss, the importance of family support, and the power of determination. The outcome remains uncertain, but Jakub’s commitment to change offers a glimmer of hope for a healthier and happier future.

What comes next for Jakub will be revealed in future episodes of Extrémní proměny. Will he be able to complete the Ironman 70.3 Hradec Králové? Share your thoughts and support in the comments below.
