Mantha’s NHL Comeback: Injury Recovery, Penguins Success & Contract Goals

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

PITTSBURGH – Kasperi Kapanen’s resurgence with the Pittsburgh Penguins is a testament to perseverance and the power of shared experience. After a grueling recovery from a torn ACL, the forward is not only back on the ice but thriving, demonstrating a level of play that has quickly become integral to the Penguins’ unexpected push toward the playoffs. Kapanen’s journey back has been marked by a renewed mental fortitude and a commitment to maximizing his impact on the team.

The road to recovery wasn’t effortless. Kapanen admitted the rehabilitation process was mentally draining, a period where he questioned what he had left to offer. However, a shared struggle with teammate Justin Kirkland, who as well suffered a torn ACL just 24 days after Kapanen’s injury, provided a crucial source of support. The pair leaned on each other and the team’s physiotherapists, to navigate the long and arduous path back to the ice. “I had no pleasure during this rehabilitation,” Kapanen said, highlighting the difficulty of the process.

Now, Kapanen is making the most of his opportunity. He has registered 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in his first 12 games this season, quickly finding his stride and contributing offensively. He credits a strong start alongside Evgeni Malkin for helping him regain his confidence, and momentum. “I got some opportunities,” Kapanen explained. “I received some nice passes from [Malkin] at the start of the season to make it easier for me, and after that, I think it really took off.”

Finding Chemistry and a Playoff Push

Kapanen’s success isn’t solely attributable to his individual efforts. He’s also developed strong chemistry with linemates Ben Kindel and Justin Brazeau, forming a productive line that’s contributing to the Penguins’ (31-16-13) surprising playoff contention. Currently, Pittsburgh sits second in the Metropolitan Division, nine points behind the Carolina Hurricanes and tied with the New York Islanders, as of March 6, 2026. Kindel praised Kapanen’s intelligence and offensive skills, noting his hunger for success. “He’s a very intelligent player, really solid offensively and with good skills,” Kindel said. “I think he’s really hungry, as is a lot of our team, to be successful this year.”

Managing the Recovery and Looking Ahead

Even as Kapanen feels he’s made significant progress, he acknowledges that a full recovery from an ACL tear is a continuous process. He’s diligent about ongoing treatments and monitoring his body to prevent setbacks. “With an injury like this, it can get worse at any time, so we obviously stay on the lookout, I take care of my body and my legs with additional treatments,” he said. “The guys here have been great in giving me time to get through these treatments. Do I think it’s 100%? Do I think it ever will? Probably not. But if I can be at 95%, I’ll take it.”

As the March 8th trade deadline approaches, Kapanen isn’t preoccupied with his long-term future. He hasn’t engaged in contract discussions with the Penguins, focusing instead on contributing to the team’s playoff push. However, he’s confident that his performance this season has secured his position and eliminated the need to rely on a tryout contract next summer. “That was my state of mind this year,” Kapanen concluded. “Obviously it’s another year where I have to prove myself, but I think I’m doing things really well. I don’t think I’ll get an eight-year extension, but I hope to get a multi-year contract.”

Kapanen’s ultimate goal is to secure a multi-year deal that provides stability and allows him to continue his career at a high level. “That was my goal during the summer, and it still is. Until I sign it, that will be the ultimate goal. Whether that takes me to 33, 34 or 35, that would be fantastic.”

The Penguins will need Kapanen’s continued strong play as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season and prepare for a potential playoff run. His story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating the resilience and determination required to overcome adversity and achieve success in the NHL.
