Maquiladoras employ 25,389 Paraguayan workers and exported USD 86.2 million as of March

Asunción, IP Agency.- As of March of this year, a total of 25,389 Paraguayans are employed by the maquiladora industries in Paraguay, being an important link for the consolidation of the Paraguayan labor sector. 44% of related jobs are occupied by women, according to the latest report from the Vice Ministry of Industry and the National Council of Maquiladora Export Industries (CNIME).

72% of the jobs linked to maquiladoras correspond to the auto parts and clothing sector, each with more than 6,000 workers employed. While the intangible services segment has 2,177 workers; followed by the plastics and manufacturing sectors with a total of 2,036 workers.

According to the data, in the third month of 2024, the maquiladoras managed to export a total of USD 86.2 million, which represents one percent more than what was recorded in February.

Main exported items

76% of the products exported by the maquiladora industries, in these first three months of the year, are mainly concentrated in five items, among which the auto parts category stands out, with a participation of 28%; followed by clothing and textiles with 19%; food products with 15%; aluminum and its manufactures with 14%. While the plastics and manufacturing sector with 7%.

The Mercosur countries continue to be the main recipients of the maquiladora industries, since 73% of these products were exported within this economic bloc. Brazil stands out with an absorption of 60%; while Argentina with 13%.

Other countries stand out, such as the United States with a reception of 5%; while Chile with another 3%. While the Philippines and Singapore, with a 3% share each.

The data indicates that currently a total of 292 companies are registered with maquiladora companies. Of which, 92% are concentrated in four specific points of the country such as Alto Paraná, which concentrates the largest number of companies; followed by Central, Capital and Amambay.
