The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado won this Monday the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize awarded each year by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

His daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, collected the award and it is the first time that the Council of Europe has awarded the Václav Havel to someone from Latin America since the organization first presented the prize in 2013.

Present

Currently, Machado is dedicated to political activity and seeks international support, to guarantee support for Edmundo González, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), who according to her won the July 28 elections and was the victim of a “fraud electoral”.

As said before, the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed the ruling party Nicolás Maduro the winner of the elections and that generated a series of protests. González and Machado led the street actions, but today only the second is still in Venezuela, since the first had to go into exile in Spain.
