Taunton, Massachusetts – A devastating explosion ripped through a three-family home on Plain Street Wednesday morning, leaving the structure completely engulfed in flames and injuring at least two people, a mother and her young child. Firefighters responded to the scene shortly before 10:00 a.m. And are currently investigating the cause of the blast.
The explosion, described as “horrific” by Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell, caused extensive damage to the home and neighboring properties. Initial reports indicate a 25-year-old woman and her 2-year-old child sustained severe burns and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries remains unknown at this time. The home is considered a total loss, according to fire officials.
House Explosion Causes Significant Damage in Taunton
Fire Chief Steven Lavigne stated that an investigation is underway to determine the origin of the explosion. Eversource has shut off gas to the area as a precautionary measure. Authorities are urging the public to avoid Plain Street, which remains closed as first responders continue to work at the scene. Neighboring homes also suffered significant damage from the fire, and residents were forced to evacuate.
William James Shivers Jr., a neighbor, recounted hearing a “big explosion” and immediately rushing to assist those in nearby homes. He described feeling the intense heat from the fire even through his clothing. “When you observe something like that, the first thing you want to do is make sure people got out,” Shivers said. “The flames were just insane, it was above the building.”
Blizzard Conditions Complicated Response Efforts
The response to the fire was complicated by recent severe weather conditions. Taunton received 29 inches of snow from the Blizzard of 2026 on Monday, making access to the scene difficult for emergency crews. Neighbors worked together to locate and clear fire hydrants buried under snowbanks, according to reports. Shivers Jr. Utilized Google Earth to pinpoint the location of the hydrants and organized a shoveling effort.
Eight residents have been displaced due to the fire, and the city of Taunton has opened a warming center to provide shelter and assistance. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet released any further details. The incident underscores the dangers of winter weather and the importance of community cooperation during emergencies.
The situation is now under control, but this was a very serious incident,” Fire Chief Steven Lavigne said. “The weather conditions present unique challenges, but we plan for these situations.”
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the cause of the explosion and the condition of those injured. The focus remains on supporting the displaced residents and ensuring the safety of the community.
