Monday 30/October/2023 – 03:30 AM Astronomers have discovered a massive gamma-ray burst, a million times brighter than our entire galaxy. This was the second brightest gamma-ray burst ever discovered, and it lasted regarding 200 seconds, according to the Independent Telescope newspaper. NASA’s James Webb A study published today in the journal Nature indicates that this object was the result of the collision of two neutron stars a million light-years away, and thanks to NASA’s James Webb telescope, astronomers were able to see that the explosion was also a cosmic chemical factory, as It created some of the rarest chemicals found on Earth. For his part, lead author Andrew Levan of Radboud University in the Netherlands said: The strongest evidence that the merger of two neutron stars caused this explosion comes from the kilonova, referring to the optical and infrared light released by the explosion. Great. A stunning NASA image published shows a kilonova hovering in space regarding 120,000 light-years away from a nearby spiral galaxy. The pair of neutron stars that produced the kilonova appear to have been ejected from that galaxy as a binary system, stuck in a death spiral. The exceptionally sensitive infrared instruments at the James Webb Space Telescope made a big difference in the success of the study, Levan explains.
