Judicial information has been opened following an audit by the Flemish administration for a possible illegal taking of interests by the mayor of Haaltert, Veerle Baeyens (N-VA), in a subsidy file, confirmed Friday the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office.

The subsidy concerns an event that took place on the sidelines of the 2022 edition of the Tour of Flanders. The local opposition lodged a complaint because of the presence of the mayor’s husband in the association concerned. The file was also transmitted to the central office for the fight once morest corruption. The municipal council will discuss the audit report on Monday behind closed doors.
