A digital scramble has gripped a generation of Arabic-speaking children and their families as MBC 3, a leading children’s television channel, altered its broadcast access parameters. The change, announced by the channel, requires viewers to manually update their satellite receiver settings to continue accessing its programming.
The shift stems from a necessary update to broadcast frequencies on both the Nilesat and Arabsat satellites, intended to ensure a high-quality signal, according to the channel. However, the update has left many viewers unable to access the channel, as the novel settings require precise manual input.
For viewers utilizing Nilesat, the new frequency is 11559, with a vertical (V) polarization, a symbol rate of 27500 and a 3/4 correction factor. Those using Arabsat must now tune to frequency 11470, maintaining the same polarization, symbol rate, and correction factor. MBC 3 has instructed viewers to navigate to the “Main Menu” on their remote control, then to “Settings,” and finally select “Manual Installation” to add the channel with the correct data.
MBC 3, a subsidiary of the MBC Group, has long been a dedicated provider of children’s content across the Arab world, broadcasting 24 hours a day. The channel currently airs the animated series “Atomic Puppet” and “Champies,” among other programs, according to its programming guide. A recently promoted series, “Qus wa Lasq” (Cut and Paste), adapts Arabic proverbs into engaging stories, aiming to preserve cultural heritage and impart wisdom to young audiences, as highlighted in a recent social media campaign.
The change in frequencies has sparked concern among viewers who fear losing access to familiar characters and programs. A YouTube video promoting episode 3 of a series titled “Al-Tufula” (Childhood) demonstrates the continued availability of Arabic-dubbed content, but relies on viewers being able to access the channel in the first place. Similarly, content available on Shahid MBC, the group’s streaming platform, offers an alternative, but requires a separate subscription and internet access.
As of Sunday, March 22, 2026, MBC 3 has not issued further public statements regarding the transition beyond the initial announcement of the new frequencies. The channel’s website provides the updated frequency information but does not offer direct assistance with the manual re-tuning process.
