McIlroy One Shot Back at Genesis Invitational – Penge & Bridgeman Lead

by James Carter Senior News Editor

LOS ANGELES – Rory McIlroy is within striking distance at the Genesis Invitational, sitting just one stroke behind co-leaders Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgeman after a strong second round at Riviera Country Club on Friday. The world number two carded a seven-under-par 65, a significant improvement from his joint 14th finish at Pebble Beach last week, and is poised for a weekend challenge at the prestigious tournament.

England’s Marco Penge leads the field alongside American Jacob Bridgeman, both having posted impressive eight-under-par 64s. Penge’s performance was particularly notable, completing 27 holes on Friday after finishing nine holes from a weather-delayed first round before tackling his second round. The Genesis Invitational, a signature event on the PGA Tour, features a 72-man field and a 36-hole cut, adding to the intensity of the competition.

Penge Overcomes Personal Challenges to Lead

Penge’s stellar play comes amidst personal challenges, as he revealed his wife is expecting their second child next week and has been in the United States without family support. “It’s been quite tough, to be fair, the last four weeks for me and my family,” Penge said, according to Golf Channel. “She’s been in the U.S. On her own, heavily pregnant, looking after a 1 1/2-year old at the same time with no family or friends around.” Despite these circumstances, Penge has managed to maintain focus and deliver exceptional golf.

Bridgeman, playing Riviera for the first time on Wednesday due to rain delays, secured his share of the lead with a late surge, birdying his final three holes. He finished with a 5-iron into a cool breeze to 8 feet, demonstrating his composure under pressure.

McIlroy Finds Riviera More Forgiving

McIlroy expressed relief at the course conditions at Riviera, contrasting them favorably with Pebble Beach. “There’s no Pacific Ocean to hit it into around this golf course, so that helps,” McIlroy stated, as reported by BBC Sport. He acknowledged some loose shots but emphasized the course’s forgiving nature, allowing for recovery even with imperfections. “I still hit some loose shots, but the course set-up is in a way that you can get away with it a little bit more,” he explained. McIlroy’s round included an eagle at the par-5 11th and four birdies, showcasing his ability to capitalize on opportunities.

Genesis Invitational Leaderboard (Halfway Stage)

Here’s a glance at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds:

  • -12: M Penge (Eng), J Bridgeman (US)
  • -11: R McIlroy (NI)
  • -9: A Scott (Aus), X Schauffele (US)
  • -8: MW Lee (Aus), P Greyserman (US)
  • -7: T Fleetwood (Eng), W Clark (US), K Kitayama (US), M Fitzpatrick (Eng)

Other notable players include Adam Scott and Xander Schauffele at nine under, while Scottie Scheffler barely made the cut, securing his place in the weekend rounds with a crucial 7-foot par putt. Golfweek reports that Chris Gotterup and Justin Rose, both 2026 PGA Tour winners, missed the cut.

The 36-hole cut at the Genesis Invitational means the top 50 players and ties, plus anyone within 10 shots of the lead, will continue to compete on Saturday.

As the tournament heads into the weekend, all eyes will be on Penge, Bridgeman, and McIlroy as they battle for the lead at Riviera Country Club. The challenging course and competitive field promise an exciting finish to the Genesis Invitational.
