Medellín Healthcare Crisis: Hospitals at 100% Capacity Due to Respiratory Diseases

Respiratory diseases triggered the occupancy of hospital emergencies in the different healthcare centers in Medellín. Saturation reaches a worrying 100% in several clinics and hospitals.

Health authorities warn that emergency saturation reached 100% in older adults and 81% in minors, due to the increase in respiratory diseases such as influenza and Covid-19.

Javier Antonio Gutiérrez, Undersecretary of public health of Medellín, pointed out that “at this time of year, when there is a peak in respiratory diseases, we are guaranteeing access to vaccination, we have 2 thousand doses of influenza available for adults and 4 thousand for children.”

Of the cases that arrive at the emergency rooms of the different healthcare centers in Medellín, 493 end in hospitalization, an increase of 45% compared to the same period in 2023.
