Mel Schilling, known for her role as a relationship expert on the reality television show Married at First Sight, has died, the BBC reported on Tuesday. She was 54 years vintage.
Schilling’s passing comes after a battle with cancer that began with a diagnosis of colon cancer in December 2023. The cancer later spread to her lungs and, to the left side of her brain, as she revealed in a heartbreaking Instagram post earlier this month.
The Australian native joined Married at First Sight in 2016, initially on the Australian version of the show before becoming a fixture on the UK edition, which airs on Channel 4. She announced her departure from the Australian show last month to focus on her health and family.
Initial Diagnosis and Treatment
Schilling first shared her cancer diagnosis on Instagram in December 2023, explaining she had been diagnosed with colon cancer after experiencing severe stomach cramps. She underwent an operation to remove a 5cm tumor and anticipated a full recovery, describing the road ahead as “rough” but optimistic. According to the BBC, she was initially told the cancer was easily eradicable.
She continued filming Married at First Sight while undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy. Schilling had also been anticipating participation in a groundbreaking clinical trial tailored to her specific gene type, scheduled to begin this month.
Cancer Progression and Final Months
Yet, Schilling’s condition took a turn at Christmas, when she began experiencing “blinding headaches and numbness down my right side.” These symptoms indicated the cancer had metastasized. “Simple tasks have develop into incredibly tough,” she wrote in her final Instagram post, adding, “I honestly don’t know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath.”
Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, her oncology team informed her there were no further treatment options available. She acknowledged her “light is starting to fade – and quickly.”
Tributes and Legacy
Channel 4 released a statement on Thursday, expressing their deep sadness at the news of Schilling’s death. “Mel has become a hugely valued and much-loved part of the Channel 4 family; to many of us she is a friend as well as a colleague,” the statement read, as reported by the BBC.
Schilling is survived by her husband, Gareth, and daughter, Madison. She often shared glimpses of her family life on social media, and her final Instagram post was accompanied by a photo of them together.
Throughout her ordeal, Schilling urged others to seek medical attention if they experienced concerning symptoms, emphasizing the importance of persistence in seeking answers. “If something doesn’t feel right, get checked out,” she advised.
The impact of Mel Schilling’s passing is being felt throughout the Married at First Sight community and beyond. Her courage and openness in sharing her journey resonated with many, and her dedication to helping others discover love will be remembered.
As the entertainment world mourns the loss of this beloved personality, her legacy as a compassionate relationship expert and a resilient individual will undoubtedly endure. The coming days will likely see further tributes from colleagues and fans as they reflect on her contributions to the show and her inspiring spirit.
